Leider funktioniert das aber vorerst nur mit DLP-Technik (2x60Hz).
Soweit ich weiß, gab es schon einemal Ankündigungen dass Lucas Star Wars einmal als 3D-Box (und als Blu-ray) neu vermarkten will.

Jetzt hat er das passende Gerät...

The demo was run from a massive Dell desktop and output onto a large DLP set. In an effort to inject new life into the fading rear-projection category, the company's pitch was that the 3D technology worked with existing DLP TVs and projectors (due to DLP's native 120 Hz refresh rate, which allows you to split it into 60/60 for 3D) but not with LCD and plasma displays.

Most of us were pretty impressed by the demo, which included clips from movies, commercials, and sporting events. There was real depth to the 3D and you got that whole feeling of things poking out at you from the screen. All the demo material had been shot in 3D, but the kicker to the whole presentation was that Mitsubishi apparently has a Blu-ray player in its labs that can convert existing 2D movies into 3D on the fly. Better yet, according to company reps, it may be available early next year.

I'm pretty skeptical it's going to show up anytime soon and I have my doubts that converted 2D content is going to look all that great in 3D. But the 3D movement is gathering more momentum as other companies like Samsung and Philips continue working on ways to bring 3D into the home. Ideally, you wouldn't have to wear glasses (Philips is trying to integrate 3D right into the display), but I have a feeling you're only going to get a true Imax-like 3D experience with some eyewear.

While Mitsubishi wasn't ready to get into pricing, one would expect to pay a premium a special-featured Blu-ray player. That said, Mitsubishi hinted that it was in discussions with one game console manufacturer to integrate the 3D technology into the system. The Wii's not capable of such feats and Microsoft's in the HD DVD camp, so one would have to assume it's Sony and the PS3.

Interessant auch, dass man diese Technik auch für eine bestimmte Videospielkonsole einsetzen will...

Eine neue Technik soll es möglich machen, 3D-Video in HDTV auf herkömmlichen Blu-ray Discs zu präsentieren. Dies verspricht TDVision mit seinem “TDV Codec”, der auf der Fachmesse SID 2008 präsentiert wird. Auf einem Standard-Blu-ray Disc-Player sollen sich die in dem Verfahren produzierten Filme ganz normal als 2D-Video in HDTV abspielen lassen.

Um auch 3D erleben zu können, ist allerdings als Zusatzkomponente der “TDVReady”-Decoder erforderlich. Ganz ohne neue Technik geht es also nicht. Dennoch betrachtet es die Firma als Vorteil, dass mit dem Verfahren bereits jetzt Filme in 3D auf normalen Blu-ray Discs abgespeichert werden können und zumindest in gewohnter HDTV-Qualität auch auf einem normalen Blu-ray Disc-Player abgespielt werden können. Das System soll kompatibel zur von Texas Instruments entwickelten DLP-basierten Technik sein, die bereits in einigen Fernsehern von Samsung und Mitsubishi in den USA eingesetzt wird.

Ob Hollywood allerdings mitmacht und so dem Käufer den erneuten Kauf einer 3D-Version in der Zukunft erspart, wie es TDVision erhofft, bleibt abzuwarten.

3D Blu-Ray, even on PS3 via a single firmware update?

An interesting technology, that decided us to interview Manuel R. Gutierrez Novelo, CEO & President of TDVision Systems. First, he explained us the technology behind the famous TDVCodec:


"We're in the process to enable the PlayStation 3 to playback 3D movies using our TDVCodec and Blu-ray discs at our R&D labs since the PS3 is enabled with the BD2.0 version. Currently we have it working on a PC in 3D and after some changes on the firmware and installing some software for the PS3 we'll be playing 3D directly form the PS3.

Movies can be either computer generated in stereoscopic 3D (Polar Express) or the U2 Concert. Those were not originally created or recorded with our technology but we just need to re-encode them. After we re-encode them with our TDVCodec in step 2 then they are ready to be seen in 3D at home where available, or in 2D where not.

The objective (and what we are talking to major studios) is to encode their existing and new 3D stereoscopic content with our TDVCodec and have the movies available in every-shop everywhere in the world since one single Blu-ray disc encoded with our format has the 2D and the 3D version and can be played back in 2D over existing 2D platforms and in 3D where the platform is available as shown in steps 4 and 5 (PC or PS3 with our firmware update and a Samsung / Mitsibishi / Kerner / TDVisor / Hundai monitor is connected)

We are working very hard on our technology lobbying, having the TDVCodec to be a standard for 3D Blu-ray movies as part of the SMPTE, MPEG, ATSC and Blu-ray organizations and we are seeking for the studios support to adopt our format since we are the only 3D-2D compatible format, all the other 3D technologies ARE NOT compatible with existing 2D infrastructures unless you acquire some expensive additional hardware, if you don't have that then you will not be able to see the 2D version of the movie, leading to double cost of mfg. by having a 2D release and a 3D release, double distribution, and they all cut the resolution by half!, we don't, we provide the best 2D and 3D experience by just having a firmware update or by using our software, that's what makes us so different and that's what has been creating all this buzz around our technology and getting the attention of Hollywood studios and Consumer Electronics manufacturers.

We have some confidential content in our labs right now, we can not disclose the titles or the names of the studios, you will see them before the end of the year and I can not disclose the names of the titles at this moment. When I get authorization for a public release of information I'll be glad to let you know.

We were demoing some impressive trailers of those movies at NAB2008 in 3D using the Samsung and our TDVisor under non-disclosure agreement, that's all I can say by now, I hope this helps.

Q & A:

P3L : In order to playback 3D movies on the PS3, will it need a firmware change and a special software, or just a firmware change?
Manuel R. : Firmware change only.

P3L : With the PS3, we'll only be able to playback 3D Blu-Ray, or 3D DVDs?
Manuel R. : Both, we have 3DBlu-ray and we have 3DDVD too with our same encoder.

P3L : To view the movie in 3D, we need a special TV. Any special glasses too?
Manuel R. : You can use the 3D TV from Samsung (both RPTV DLP or the their newer Plasma), Mitsubishi, Kerner electronics, IZ3D Monitor and Hundai. The DLP based TVs work under shutter glasses (by blocking the left and right eye alternatively) Kerner, IZ3D and Hundai use polarization glasses.

P3L : Do you have a date for the release of this technology on PS3 ? 2008, 2009,...?
Manuel R. : Coming soon in 2008 having our logo or any of the following phrases : "in 3D where available by TDVision", "in TDVision where available", "TDVReady".

TDVision has announced that they will release 15 3D films on Blu-ray beginning later this years. The films, which are encoded using the companies TDVCodec, will work on both 3D-ready and standard HDTVs, giving the user the flexibility to view the material on either display. Blu-ray ist doch jetzt schon Klasse 3D Kino auf einem großen Plasma.

Also 3D bietet einem noch viel mehr als HD-Auflösung. Das wird auch der Normalo so sehen. Das wird ein Selbstläufer, wenn auch alle wichtigen Filme nun in 3D produziert werden.
Ohne Brille konnte mich das auf der IFA noch nirgends überzeugen. Mit Brille deutlich besserer Effekt. I-MAX in Berlin ist da ein absolute Empfehlung. Müssen halt nur die Bildwiederholrate verdoppeln bis verdreifachen. Dann fällt auch das ermüdende und störende Flimmern weg. Aber mit den neuen 120Hz/240Hz-MCFI sollte das heutzutage kein Problem mehr sein.

Glaube mir, das wird alleine deswegen gekauft, weil es cool ist, genauso wie die ersten Flachbildschirme nur aus Protzgründen gekauft wurden.

Da fällt mir auch gerade ein, ich wollte nach meinem Diplom endlich mal wieder ins 3D-Kino. Jetzt habe ich ja mal wieder Zeit. Mal schauen was so in Weimar läuft...

Unbedingt!  Das Berliner IMAX fande ich bezüglich 3D-Effekt, bisher am besten. Leider flimmert die ältere Technik dort. Die digitalen 3D-Kinos wie das CINEMAGNUM flimmern nicht so stark. Leider war der DLP-Christie-Projektor dort nicht ideal eingestellt und es wurden viele Details im Schwarz verschluckt. Dadurch wirkte das Bild etwas flacher. Mal schauen wie es beim nächsten Besuch ausschaut.

Man hofft das sich Hollywood noch Ende diesesn Jahres zu einem 3D-BD-Standard einigen kann und möchte darauf hin ab 2010 erste 3D-BD-Player bringen. In der Theorie sollten auch aktuelle 240Hz-TV´s dafür ausreichen, die dann die hohe Bildfrequenz nutzen um wechselseitig ein Bild einmal für das linke und einmal für das rechte Auge darzustellen. Panasonic hatte ja schon später verlauten lassen, dass man nur einen 3D-BD-Standard zustimmt der die volle HD-Auflösung nutzt, also keine stereoskopischen Halbbildverfahren.

Sofern Brillen zum Einsatz kommen, ist die 3D-Darstellung prinzipiell mit heutiger TV-Technik, die Bildwiederholungsraten von 200 Hz und mehr erreicht, aber keine große Hürde mehr, da diese ebenso in die Lage versetzt werden könnte, im Wechsel z.B. 60 Bilder je Sekunde für das linke und rechte Auge darzustellen, die dann mit einer Filter- oder Shutter-Brille dem richtigen Auge zugeordnet werden.

Sony, Samsung und JVC arbeiten mit RealD zusammen. Sollte also bei denen identisch sein. Zudem sprechen die Hersteller davon, dass ihre 3D-TV´s mit allen 3D-Standards (FullHD und halbe HD-Auflösung) kompatibel sein sollen.
Sony und Panasonic werden auf jeden Fall 1080p für jedes Auge nutzen. Samsung sicherlich auch, da man ja schon davon spricht die eigene 2D/3D-Konvertierung wäre besser als bei Toshiba...

Nein. Bis auf Car-Hifi gab es nichts Neues auf der CES. Frühestens zur High-End in München (Mai oder Juni?). Mit 3D-BD-Playern plant man bei Pioneer erst ab Ende 2010.
